SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly mot liny of llio local Si3i 1 o School Committee was hold lose evening. Present : Messrs Ilornblow (chairman), Rev.' d. 11. Bmlin, Hussey, McMurray mid Woods. The secretary reported that he had interviewed Mr Cooke re the asphalting contract. The latter had informed him that owing to the difficulty in procuring metal he had not hecn able to go on with the work.. An oiler to do the work on day labour bad been, received. It was resolved (o bold (he mutter over until the December meeling, and carry the work out during the Judidays. Correspondence was read from Die Donrd, stating that balance of subsidy, £1 18s lid, would be paid for covering for teachers’ room when vouchers were forwarded for S3imo. —The secretary said it appeared as if the Hoard could not Irnsl the Committee. The sum of £ll odd had been raised and forwarded to the Hoard for subsidy purposes with (lie object of bearing balf-cosl of hot WiWer installation at I be headteachers residence. The Committee's contribution, with subsidy, would total £22. The work ( list about £2O, and yet itII Die Committee received back was £1 18s fid. It appeared as if Die Committee, instead of bearing half-cost, bad paid for the whole of the work. The Committee should have only contributed £3, The Chairman said it was questionable whether Die Department would pay a subsidy on contributions other (ban for school purposes. Dub-seclioq a uf section Kii) of the education Act provided that “ a subsidy at Die rate of one pound for every pound of voluntary contributions in money( other than bequests).” The Committee applied for Die subsidy on the amount contributed, and if (be Board bad obtained the subsidy and used (he whole amount for the hot water installation, the Committee should ask for a refund to be used for other purposes of school improvement. No doubt there were regain-, Dons governing such expenditure, but the Committee wore only responsible for half cost of hot water installation. It was decided to communicate with the Board on the subject. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £1 10s (id, and outstanding accounts totalling about £lB. The visitors for the mouth reported that everything was in a satis-: factory condition.. Messrs M eld array and Parker were appointed visitors for the month,
