THE NINTH BALLOT.
NATIONAL SHORTAGE 1,802. 8,117 NAMES DRAWN. The drawing of the ninth ballot from among the remaining members of the First Division of the Expeditionary Force Reserve, for the purpose of completing the 33rd Reinforcements, was completed at Wellington yesterday. DISTRICT SHORTAGES. The shortage for the 33rd Reinforcements, mobilising two months herfcce, for which voluntary recruiting closed down on Saturday last, is 1,802, being the second largest that Inis occurred since the Military Service Act was brought into operation. The following (aide shows then number of voluntary recruits obtained for the 33rds in the various recruiting districts, and the respective shortages:—
It will he seen from the above that cwry recruiting district is again in the ballot, including the Buy of Plenty, which, up till now, bus held ihe proud record of having been in Iwo ballots only, it will he noticed also, that in some of the districts the voluntary response has been particularly poor, the three Canter-, bury districts, for instance, only semiring a combined total of 28. Tho West Coast on this occasion has l!) fit volunteers to its credit, as against none at all for the 3,2nd draft. As in the last ballot, the proportion of men being called up to till-the vacancies is 41 lo 1. The actual, number of men whose names are being drawn is 8, LIT.
