OBITUARY.

WASHINGTON SMITH STEWART—AGED 75 YEARS. The death occurred at Te Awanmtu yesterday afternoon of Mi' Washington Smith Stewart, formerly headmaster of the Foxton State School, at (ho- age of 75 years. The late Mr' Stewart had been in indifferent health for some time. He held the degree of 8.A., being a graduate in Arts of the Royal University in Ireland, and also held the classification of B 1 under the New Zealand Department of Education. He entered the Education Department's employ in 1882, his first three years being spent as headmaster of the Cambridge High School. Whilst there he refused an inspectorship under the Department. He was afterwards at the Timaru High School, and at Greymouth. He occupied the position of headmaster of the local State school for the greater part of twenty years, being retired on superannuation at the end of 1000. During Mr Stewart’s connection with the school he endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact, and the ex-pupils have all a very warm place in their hearts for their old master. He took a very keen interest in their welfare, both in the school and out, and his hand was ever in his pocket to assist in keeping up (heir supply of sporting material. A Her retiring from the Education Department, the late Mr Stewart served for some time as a Councillor on (he local Borough Council.

The deceased gentleman was married in Foxton, his wife having predeceased him by four years. After her death Mr Stewart removed to Te Awamutn, where he resided with his nephew, Mr Geo. Archibald. The late Mr Stewart look a keen interest in all outdoor sports, and particularly in cricket. He occupied the position of secretary of the Foxton Cricket Chib for many years, the existence of the Club being due lo Ihe interest he evinced in the game. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon, leaving All Saints’ Church at 2.30 p.m. for the Foxton cemetery.
