COLLISION IN WELLINGTON HARBOUR.
WOOTTON AND QUEEN OF THE SOUTH. A collision, whereby the wooden coastal steamer Wootlon (151 tons, Captain Larsen) was considerably damaged, occurred in the harbour a! Wellington shortly alter 8.30 o'clock on Wednesday night. The coastal steamer Queen of the South (IDS lons, Captain Brigdeu), which was lying at No. 11, Queen’s Wharf, was departing from her berth, and, after going ahead on one of the springs, started to back in order to get away from the wharf. It is I bought that a squall then struck her, for before anything could lie done to stop her progress, she was driven on to the Wootton, which was lying stern on at berth No. 13 (south), Queen's Wharf. One of the crew, just prior to the collision, gave warning, and the captain put his engines ahead in an endeavour to stop her “way." This, however, could not he done, and the Queen of the South, crashed into the Wootlon, carrying away the lines, lifting the decking, breaking the railing, and bursting in the door of the cook’s room. The cook was luckily ashore at the time.' The shock of the impact caused the Wootlon to swing round, but she was soon secured and made fast. There is no indication that the Wootlon is leaking, and the Queen of the South is also apparently undamaged, as she proceeded on her way lo Foxton immediately after the accident. However, the Woollen will have lo undergo a proper survey at Wellington before sin l puls to sea again. The owners of the Queen of the South are .Messrs Levin and Go., and of the Wootton, the Kaiapoi Shipping and Trading Company.—Cost.
