THE TONGARIRO.
VALUE OP THE CARGO.
Jn conversation with Mr Cato on Monday night, a Hawke’s Bay Herald reporter was informed (hat the cargo on hoard the Tongariro at the time of the wreck was valued at about £220,000, while the’ value of the portion salvaged is estimated at £12,800. Details of the insurances were not available locally, but it. was understood, said Air Cato, that Lloyd’s will lie the heaviest losers. Even if the vessel were fully insured, and it was hardly likely, the New Zealand Shipping Company lias suffered a great loss, while to replace the vessel it would probably cost not less than double the figure at. which she was originally built. According to latest advices from the wreck, all that remains of the Tongnriro, the fore portion, is awash, while it is believed that very little cargo would he saved, as the bed of the sea in the vicinity of the peninsula is extremely rough, and the ease cargo would, as a result, ho broken up on the rough surface. Of the vessel itself, all that' Inis been saved are a few derricks.
