Xows aviis rocoivtMl lusV evening by the Auckland agents of the Commonwealth and Dominion line that a (ire had occurred on the steamer Fort Nicholson, which left Auckland for Wellington yesterday afternoon. Soon after the vessel left the wharf smoke was noticed issuing from the forepeak. The Port Nicholson anchored oft: Rangitoto Island, and the forepeak was flooded.

A later wireless message stated that the outbreak had been quelled, and the steamer proceeded on her voyage about 5.30 p.m. The tire was some distance away from the cargo, among the ship’s stores. It is reported that not a great deal of damage was done. The Fort Nicholson is one of the best-known Home liners on (he New Zealand coast, and is the biggest vessel of the Commonwealth and Dominion line, and until recently she was known as the Makarini. She is a vessel of 10,024 tons gross register, and was built four years ago at the yards of Workman. Clark and Co., of Belfast. The Port Nicholson is commanded by Captain Hollis.
