GLOWING FOXTON.
(Malt Wilson—For the “Herald.”)
In winter when the chill morn nips, and dismal rain with steady drips wets all the: little breezes, the Fox ton citizen makes moan, and ceaselessly his nose is blown, to dodge eternal sneezes. He trudges home in damp attire, and lights his cosy household lire, to revel in its blazes; its gracious warmth delights his hones and stops his irritated groans, the while he sings its praises. But in the spring the sea air blows in warm, soft whispers round his toes and round his summer cady; and so the tire is given best and most folks hunt about with zest for places cool and shady. But there’s some cove in Foxton town, some gay, heat-loving, festive clown who still thinks winter s biting; he must be keen on lire, this bloke, for no one else can spot the ■joke of his scheme for town lighting. Each night or so the tirebell rings, and folks rush out in half their things, to see what building s blazing. But up to date the match expert has done a disappearing spurt in manner most amazing. In three months at the present, rate, the town will vanish off the slate, and all be ash and clinkers, and all the Foxton folks can do will be to sail the Manawatu, in floating tire-proof jinkers. But then, 1 fear, the flre-licnd peach may play his jokes at Foxton Beach, to show his flaming learning. A cave as cute as this hot sprite would set the sad sea waves alight and start the ocean burning.
