LABOURER KNOCKED DOWN

Christchurch, July 10

A tragic affair, in Cashel Street, near the Cafe de Paris Hotel, yesterday afternoon, resulted in the death of Frederick William Allen, a labourer, aged 42, residing in Madras Street. Allen and Private Michael Carey, of the Sixteenth Reinforcements, on liual leave, were engaged in a heated argument, Carey apparently suggesting that Alien was a shirker.

The upshot was that Carey hit Allen three times in the face. Allen did not retaliate, but stood with Ins hands in his pockets looking at his assailant. A constable went up l» the soldier for the purpose of arresting him, but before he could do so Carey dealt Alien another smashing blow on Die jaw, and knocked him down like a log, the buck of his head striking the asphalt with tremendous force, and rendering him unconscious. this morning. At the time of the assault both men were perfectly sober. Alien was a big, heavy man. Carey is now under arrest. CAREY CHARGED WIIH . MURDER. Christchurch, July 17. Michael Carey, the soldier who was arrested in connection with the death of Frank William Aden on Saturday night, appeared at Court to-day, charged with murder. A charge of obscene language was also preferred. Accused was remanded till Friday. Bail was not asked for.
