POISONED BY KATIPO.
SPIDERS NUMEROUS IN
SOUTH.
A feature of the summer has been the increased number of katipo spiders infesting the seaside resorts of the Dominion. New Brighton, Governor’s Bay, and the coast in the immediate vicinity of Christchurch this year have had more than the average number of these unwelcome visitors, and reports from Wanganui and other North Island towns tell of similar visitations. Mr A, P. Hopkins, the wellknown works manager of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, had a particularly painful experience. While sitting inside his house, which is about five chains from New Brighton beach, he was bitten on the temple by a katipo. His head aud neck became greatly swollen, and ior four days he had to keep to his bed, A doctor attended him, but it was nearly two weeks before he was well enough to resume business. The scar on the temple will prove permanent.
