PASSING OF A PIONEER.
MR JOHN DAVIES
The death Is announced of Mr John Davies of Koputaroa (near Levin), one of the best known settlers on this coast. The deceased gentleman, who was a director of the well known stock auctioneering firm of Abraham and Williams, Ltd., had reached an advanced age in life and had been in failing health for some time past. In the early days of the settlement on this coast he took up a large holding in the Whirokiuo district, which was extended until he possessed one of the finest estates in the Horowheuua County. For many years he interested nimself in local government affairs at Foxton, but later in life transferred his activities to the Horowheuua district. He was a member of the Horowhenua County Council, Horowheuua A. and P. Association, Levin Racing Club, and other local institutions, for whose welfare he laboured unceasingly, and there is little doubt that each profited largely by his advice and assistance. The late Mr Davies had a wide and practical knowledge of farming matters, and as a breeder of stock he was wellknown throughout the Dominion. His success in life was due entirely to his own energy and ability. The Horowheuua County has suffered a loss by his death, as he was one of its most energetic and capable settlers. The late Mr Davies was married to the eldest daughter of the late Mr Charles Howe, of Foxton, lor whom much sympathy will be felt in the bereavement she has, sustained.
