There are two big ruts on the road near the Rope Works which require filling it a serious accident in the locality is to be avoided. Included in the Gisborne draft of the 13th Reinforcements (says a Gisborne paper) was a recruit 6ft. gin. in height and weighing 16. stone. He was the tallest man in Government employ in Poverty Bay, and will be the tallest soldier in the New Zealand Army. On Monday night he walked along the Parade with two fellow recruits, both tall men but' small in comparisod, and amused himself by plucking small branches from the boughs of the pine trees eight or nine feet high. “Baby,” as he is familiarly dubbed by his comrades, was at one time sergeant in the West Coast (Hokitika) Mouuteds, and by trade is a locomotive driver. He hopes to induce the military authorities to make use of his abilities in this connection.

The following story told by Lord Charles Beresford says : “ There was once a captain on the China station, he says, who asked the Admiralty for a baulk of timber because his mainyard had been carried away. Whereupon the Admiralty officially desired to be informed who had carried it away, where to, and why.” Of course the story is only a sailor’s yarn; the Admiralty is not composed of such a pack of idiots as the genial, hot-headed Beresford would have people believe. Such yarns are not difficult to invent. Here is a specimen of a reporter’s yarn that went through the press many years ago. The manager of a big sheep run in Australia cabled to his principal in London that the ewes were now lambing, but owing to inclement weather immense numbers of the lambs were dying. Promptly came the cabled reply,‘‘Stop the lambing at once.” There is as much truth u this yarn as in Beresford’s.

A start with the night shift was made on Tuesday night. The following announcement has been issued from the Federal Government House The Government having called for all available assistance, and being in need of all the money the country can spare, the Governor-General will no longer attend race or other meetings, which, it may be held, would tend to dissipate energy and divert funds from the service of the war.
Owing to a slight mishap to the generating plant at Fuller’s Pictures last night, there was a short stop in the picture pro gramme. The gap was filled in with musical selections by Miss White, who kept the audience well entertained. Popular choruses were aFo sung by the audience, and the mishap was converted into a pleasant it improvised extra.
General Godiey, writing to the Defence Minister just prior to the Gallipoli evacuation, said : “I have written to the Turkish commander, who will come in when we leave, asking him to lake steps to preserve the graves of our men. I feel sure this will be effected, as the Turks have been most honourable during the eight months we have been fighting them, and twill not do anything to desecrate our heroes’ resting places.” The Foxton Ladies Guild have decided to abandon picture entertainments in future as a means of raising funds to assist them in their work for the wounded soldiers. The response of the public in chis connection has been very , disappointing of late. The Guild desire to publicly thank Mr Hamer for his kindness in putting these entertainments on, and for the financial assistance so rendered which is keenly appreciated by the guild.
