WHIROKINO BRIDGE.
Reporting on the Whirokino bridge at Saturday’s - meeting of the Horowhenua County Council, the engineer stated : In re Whirokino bridge traffic planking. —I met Mr Hick ford, the engineer for the Manawatu County, on the bridge on the 24th ultimo, and I regret to say we could not agree about what we should use for planking. He seems to have got it into his head that nothing will do but sin totara. I have never seen anything but ain used, and I fail to see what purpose it would serve ; if we make it thicker we would need to renew all the cross battens, as they are now worn down to about 1 thick. If we use ain planking the greater part of the battens will do for years. I recommended him to use ain jarrah. The difference in thickness would make it the cheapest, and he would not agree, but as there is auother contributing body I think it would be well to let them have a say (1 mean the Poxton Borough Council). I think I can safely guarantee that for ,£l5O I could fix up the bridge that it would not require any more for five or six years. I would have recommended asphalt, but we have no roller, and another thing suitable (shingle) is very hard to procure at the place. I hear the Rangitikei County Council have done the Bulls bridge, and it is a very good job. At Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council a copy of the above report was read ; also a report from the engineer to the Manawatu County Council, in which totara was recommended. — The Council decided to notify both County Councils that the Foxton Borough Council favoured totara.
