IN THE GULF_OF RIGA. SEVERAL GERMAN SHIPS SUNK. THE GERMAN FLEET DRIVEN OUT. London, August 22. Official.—During the Riga naval battle the German battle-cruiser Moltke, three cruisers, and seven torpedo boats were destroyed. The Germans tried to land near Pernovin. They had four vessels crammed with troups. The attempt at landing was repulsed. The Germans were exterminated. The German fleet then withdrew from the Gulf. [The Moltke is a sister ship of the famous Goeben, which is now in Turkish waters. She was of 22,640 tons, and twenty-four knots speed, and armed with ten ir-inch Suns. J Phtroorad, August 22. The “Russky Invalid" states that the chief units of the Russian Baltic Fleet are not in the Gulf of Riga, which the lesser vessels and mines defend. Pktrockad, August 23, The President of the Duma announced the German naval loss and the landing at Pernovin, wherein four barques of enormous dimensions, crammed with soldiers, were used. The Russian troops, without the co-opera-tion of the artillery, exterminated the landing troops and captured the barques. London, August 23. The Daily Mail’s Petrograd correspondent reports that beyond file President’s announcement in tlie Duma there is no authentic confirmation or details of the Riga fight. One report slates that a British submarine sank the Moltke, and the rest may be exaggeration based on the lact that a number of German destroyers were crippled. The news aroused much enthusiasm in Petrograd. The Dally Chronicle states that the losses are privately reported to be greater than officially announced.
