A meeting flf the local Patriotic Society will .he held in the Council Chambers at 4-3° o’clock on Thursday afternoon -for the purpose of making final arrangements in connection with the Jumble Sale on Friday.

The public is reminded of the benefit picture entertainment to be given in the Town Hall on Thursday evening in aid of the Girls’ Guild, Apart from the excellent picture programme to be screened, several vocal items will adfi interest to the programme, 'fickcls are going off well, and a bumper house is assured. The Wellington City Council has, on the suggestion of Cr Fuller, decided to place 50 wire .baskets lor waste paper, etc., at various places in the city of Wellington. Cr Fuller recently visited Foxton, and no doubt the installing of (he above system lor dealing with waste paper and rubbish is a result of observations made on his visit here, several of these receptacles being in use in Main Street.

A woman who had asked for maintenance from her husband, when questioned by Mr Kettle, staled that she was only married last May, She left her husband two days afterwards, having heard he had been married before and divorced, and the priest told her that a Roman Catholic could not marry a divorced person, A very pleasing ceremony took place in the Town Hall, after the picture entertainment on Saturday night, when a presentation was made to Mr W. Knewstub, who is severing his connection with the firm. In handing the recipient a case of pipes as a mark of esteem, Mr Smith referred to the courteous manner in which Mr Knewstub had discharged his duties. Mr Knewstub suitably responded, after which his health was drunk in bumpers. Between forty and fifty guests spent a very enjoyable time at the residence of Mr and Mrs M. O’Reilly on Saturday evening, the occasion being to bid farewell to their sou, Michael, who is a member of the Eighth Reinforcements. The Borough Band was in attendance and played several selections and a number of vocal and instrumental items were also contributed and valedictory speeches made. Mr O’Reilly was presented with a wristlet watch and shaving outfit by his brothers and sisters. After supper had been partaken of dancing was indulged in until midnight. A picture of special interest will be included in Saturday's programme at the Town Hall, depicting “The Bombardment of the Dardanelles,’’ by British and French warships. This is a genuine picture taken on the spot and is without doubt the finest war topical yet screened. The local public is indebted to Messrs Fuller’s for their consideration in sending this absorbing film to this district immediately after its showing in Wellington. There is going to he a crowded house to witness this film and patrons are advised by the management to avoid disappointment by booking early at Mrs Teviotdale’s. The latest list of casualties at the Dardanelles contains the name ot Trooper Harold Clarence Prosser who has been killed in action. Trooper Prosser is the first Foxtonian to lay down his life in the service of his country. The late Trooper Prosser was a son of Mr James Prosser, of Taradale, Hawke’s Bay, and was well and favourably known in this district having resided here on and oil for a number of years. He was 28 years ot age. He left New Zealand with the Main Body as a member of the Mauawatu Mounted Rifles and when in Egypt volunteered for service at the Dardanelles as an infantryman. The deceased was a member of the local Druids’ Dodge and was much respected by all who knew him. The Borough Band at yesterday’s function was, in the absence of the bandmaster, under the conductorship of Band-Sergeant J. Newth. At Wellington six young men have been fined £5 each for taking liquor to Trentham Camp. The winning number on the cash register ticket Issued last week by Walker and Furrie was 580, the gift going to Miss Nancy Ross. This week’s gift will be a brass-rail fender. Wanganui Flower Day on Saturday realised At Palmerston on the same day 2s gd was collected. This money is to provide comforts for the wounded soldiers. When addressing the men who left Foxtou by yesterday alternoon’s train to join the Eighth Reinforcements, the Mayor mentioned that Mr B, G. Gower had donated a sum to provide leather waistcoats (or each Foxtou man in that contingent. An impoilant meeting of members and adherents ot the Foxtou Presbyterian Church will be held on Thursday evening at 8 o’clock, for the purpose of authorising and signing a call to • the Rev Mr Bredin, now supplying at Shannon. A bronze bas-reliet will shortly be placed in St. Paul’s in memory of Captain Scott and his comrades inscribed "Inflexible of purpose, steadfast in courage, resolute in endurance in the face of unparalleled misfortue. Their bodies are in the Antarctic ice but the memory of their deeds is an everlasting monument.’’ The wedding took place yesterday at St Peter's Church, Palmerston N. of Mr J. Aitken, fourth assistant at the Foxton School, and formerly of Campbell Street School, and Miss Hilda Smyth, of Palmerston. The ceremony, which was fully choral, was performed by the Rev. W. W. F. Groves, of Huuterville. At the Palmerston Opera House on Saturday night during tlie performance of "The Man Who Stayed at Home,’’ a box of chocolates was auctioned by Miss Violet Paget and realised a sum of This sum will be devoted towards supplying 500 sheepskin waistcoats by the Palmerston Ladies’ Patriotic Committee. Included among the names of wounded New Zealanders appears another Foxton boy and ex-pupil of the local State school, namely, 10/1723 Private R, J, Andrews, who was wounded in the head between the 7UI and Btb of August. He is a sou o£ Mr and Mrs Andrews, of Foxton. He is one of Foxton’s youngest who has fallen for his country, celebrating his 20th birthday by going into the firing line on June 4th. It will be seen, therefore, that he has seen a good deal of fighting, but unfortunately has now to withdraw after doing his best for the good old flag. One ot the urgent needs of the Borough Band is a set of uniforms for players; and an effort is uovv to be made to provide same. Mr L, R. Freeman has kindly consented to supply one, and the band secretary will be pleased to receive the names ot any other townsmen prepared to follow the good example set by Mr Freeman. An opening is now offering which should commend itself to men who are desirous of serving with the forces, but who have not been able to do so owing to some slight defect. The recruiting officer (Sergeant-Major Johnston) will receive applications for positions as permanent medical orderlies, cooks, kitchen hands, wardsmeu, sanitary inspectors, futnigators, vatmeu, clerks, and storemen. The men are required for the military hospitals, and preference will be given to applicants over or under the military age, married men, or those who have been rejected as slightly unfit.
