The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, August 24, 1915. THE SUPREME SACRIFICE.

The largest number of local recruits to leave Foxton to join the Reinforcements to undergo training for the front, left yesterday afternoon, and were accorded a splendid send-off. They looked the picture of health, and after they have undergone the strenuous period of training in store for them, will be fit to take their place side by side with the pick of the veterans, and Foxton can rest assured that they will not be found wanting in those fighting qualities, which is the pride of our race, when the time comes to take their place in the fighting line — wherever that may be. The sentiments expressed by Mayor Fraser and the Rev Mr Raine at the railway station finds an echo in the heart of every citizen and loyal subject: of our King and Empire, We regret tiiat similar send-offs were not accorded other local men who have gone to the front, but owing to their sudden call and quick departure, time did not allow of anything in the nature of a public farewell. But Foxton Includes those who have gone before in all the good wishes expressed to the men who departed yesterday. That they will all play the man and uphold the high opinion we have of them, goes without saying, and we sincerely hope that the God of Battles will guide and protect them, and in due time bring them safely back. Those who have gone—who have made the supreme sacrifice —have set a glorious example to a number of local young men who have no valid excuse to shirk their duty to King and country in this the hour of trial. The cry has come from the wearied men in the trenches ; “For God’s sake send us reinforcements.” We cannot understand any young, able-bodied man refusing to answer the call except from a higher sense of duty, and we therefore hope to see Foxton treble the number of men It has already sent forward.
