BENEFIT ENTERTAINMENT.
A SUCCESSFUL, AFFAIR. UUUe did Mrs Bangley senr. guess when she forwarded a small Union Jack badge to the Girls’ Guild for auction that it would realise anything like the amount it brought when offered on Tuesday night, at the Town Hall. Mrs Bangley is one of the few pioneers left to us of the early titties, and we beg only her pardon lor referring to her as “a fine old Christian lady ot the good old stock.” Her heart has gone out to our boy? at the front, and if prayer goes for anything, then her supplications on their behalf will not be in vain. In offering a donation on behalf of the wounded fund, her regret was that she could not contribute in large measure, but sent a little badge, which she suggested might be sold to supplement her dona*> tion. The badge was auctioned by Mr Hornblow, who asked the privilege of being the first buyer at 2s 6d. It was then bought by the following :—K. Furrie £l, W. E. Bullard £h Rev Raiue ss, John Speirs £1 is, Alf. Fraser 1 os, R. Dixon 10s, B. Gower £l, D, Munro 55, A. H, Yates ss, A. J. Kellow £l, H. Thynue ss, IB Gabites ss, Mrs Cunningham 23 fid, Mr Hughes 2s fid, Miss Wauklyn ss, Mr Neylon 2s fid, A. Jenks 23 fid, Girls’ Guild Committee 10s, making a total of £8 13s fid. Then it was offered for final sale, and after some keen competition it was knocked down to Mr B. G. Gower lor £5. Mr Gower was accorded three hearty cheers for bis further generosity to the funds. The total amount realised from the sale of the badge was 13s fid.
The drawing for the art union prizes resulted as follows -First prize (beautiful art table: cloth, donated by Mrs Tansley, of Dan* uevirke), Mr Eudvigson ; second (art cushion, donated by Miss I. Maroni), Mrs Lyon ; third (painting, donated by Miss Edwards), Miss Edwards. The drawing was done by little Miss Eucy Hussey. The picture programme was of exceptional merit. Mr Meates contributed two vocal items, and was accorded a fine reception. The result of the entertainment, art sale, should return upwards of to the Girls’ Guild fund for the wounded soldiers.
