MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
As the time for receiving nominations approaches, more interest is being evinced locally in matters municipal. A few days ago it was feared that some difficulty would be experienced in gelling sufficient men to come forward to fill the nine chairs in the Council Chamber set aside for the use of Councillors, but a material change has taken place, and from present indications it appears that there will be at least fourteen or fifteen aspirants for municipal honours at the forthcoming poll. It is understood that Cr Speirs has decided to retire at the end of the current term, aud Cr Barber has also decided not to again contest a seat, as he intends leaving Foxton for Auckland within the next eight or nine months. Cr Whiblsy, who re. - ■ untied his intention of retiring ai the end of the current term, has, at the request of a number of electers, consented to again oiler his services. Of the present Councillors therefore, with the exception of Crs Speirs aud Barber aud Cr Chrystall (who is a candidate for the Mayoralty) it seems safe to assmns that the others will again come forward. Other candidates definitely announced are Messrs W. Kirkley, J. McColl, J. W. Stevenson, C. Simmons and R. Bryant, and amongst, the names mentioned as “probables” are Messrs F, . Gardes aud H. W. Richmond. The only nomination so far received by the Returning Officer is that of James William Stevenson, nominated by George Henry Stiles and William Bullard.
