IMPORTANT TO FLAXMILLERS.
The Manawatu Flaxmill Employees’ Union proceeded against George Craw, of Linton, flaxmiller, in the Palmerston North Magistrate’s Court, claiming a penalty for failing to dismiss a non unionist employee when requested to do so by the union. The case for the union, for whom Mr Hillier appeared, was that defendant was approached by the Union to dismiss an employee, Rountree, and failed to do so. Evidence was given by P. T. Robinson, secretary of the Union, to that effect. A. man named Launders was sent down, but returned and reported that defendant had not complied with the award. Launders had had 12 or 14 years’ experience, and bad gone practically through all branches of work. Rountree bad about sis years’ experience, and had since joined the Union. Mr Poynton S.M., held that the employer was best entitled to judge between the two men, and gave judgment for defendant. Mr Fitzherbert applied for costs, which were allowed at £1 is solicitor’s tee and each witness 1 os.
