A meeting of local business people was held yesterday to decide what holidays should be observed for Easter closing. After some discussion it was decided to adjourn the meeting till xVlonday.
The services at All Saints’ Church to-morrow will be found in another column. The services for Good Friday and Easter Day will be published in Thursday’s issue.
The Stratford ratepayers, by a large majority, decided in favour of a proposal to borrow ,£9OOO for the erection of new municipal buildings in place of those recently destroyed by fire. The New Zealand flying machine, the “Britannia, 1 ” which was presented some little time ago to the Dominion by the Imperial Air Fleet Committee (England), has been sent to the front by the New Zealand Defence Department, states the British Australasian. The Wanganui regatta is being held this afternoon. The Manawatu Rowing Club had nominated a pair H. Baughen T. White) in the double sculls, Mr H. McKegney in the Luxford single sculls, but on account ol Mr Baughen suffering trom influenza the club will not now be represented. Charles Hogan, a bench loader at Messrs Saunders Bros, mill, met with a nasty accident yesterday. He Jell on a broken bottle, and his hand \yas badly cut. The sale ot gifts in connection with the Methodist harvest thanksgiving returned a sum of a little over ,£l3. The social in connection with same was touch enjoyed by those present. The local corps of the Salvation Army will conduct their Plarvest Festival to-morrow under the leadership of Brigadier Carmichael, from Wellington. A large quantity of fruit and vegetables will be sold on Monday night and a social programme will be submitted. The seizure of Schleswig-Hol-stein has always weighed upon the conscience of Britain. We ought to have met Prussiauisra then ; it is a bad spot in our history, and there could be no more popular thing in Britain to-day, alter a half-century, than the restoration of these lost provinces to their proper owners. —Mr H, G. Wells. At Olaki last Tuesday night, a Territorial in uniform named Robert Harvey was arrested for causing trouble in the town hall. The following morning he was charged with using obscene language and threatening behaviour. He was fined £lO dr two mouths on the first charge, and £2 or 14 days on the second. The services in the Presbyterian Church to morrow will be conducted by the minister, Rev. J. M. Thomson, M.A. in the morning, and by Mr J. Chrystal in the evening. Pilgrim’s Progress will be given as usual for the children in the morning, and the Sabbath school will be held in the afternoon.
Tne Rev. Mr Crawford preaches bis farewell service at the local Methodist church to-morrow morning. Sunday week the services will be conducted by the Rev. Mr Coatswortb, and the following Sunday by the Rev. Mr Southern, both ex-superintendents of the circuit. The Rev. Mr Crawford has been transferred to the Otaki circuit, and his district will extend from Paekakariki to Te Horo.
A well-known missionary working in Cairo with the troops, the Rev. Dr. Zwerner, writing to the Rev. J. Talke, of the New Zealand Baptist Mission, says ; “ The New Zealand men, especially the chaplains and the commanding officers, have won the favour of all the residents of Cairo. I think without exception they are the finest batch of troops that we have seen here.”
The Queen of the South with general Irom Wellington, crossed inwards on Thursday afternoon, but stuck at the mud flat, and only reached the wharf at 5,30 p.m. yesterday. She will sail to-morrow for Wellington with a cargo of hemp, and is expected back again on Monday. The Awahou will load produce at Lyttelton on Monday lor Foxton, and should arrive on Wednesday. The monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court held before Mr J. W. Poynton S.M., yesterday morning was a very short one, only undefended civil cases being set down for hearing. Judgment for plaintiff was entered up by default in the following cases : D. McCauley v. R. Carroll, claim costs £2 14s ; J, M. Kelly v. W. H. and M. Barton, £26 6s sd, costs £1 9s ; J. Walls v. W. IL and M. Barton, £(> IS3, costs 14s.
The annual competition for the Field Shield between Rifle Clubs in the Otaki electorate is being fired on the Palmerston range this afternoon. The Foxton team left by this morning’s train, one man short. The following is the team: Kirkley, Barber, C. Morgan, Ingram (2), C. Rand, H. Hamer, Hollington and Senior. The condition of the shoot are seven shots each at 200, 500 and 600 yards, the team with the highest aggregate to hold the Shield twelve mouths.

One of the latest German submarine U 29 is reported sunk with all bauds. Marjory Eveline Dews aged 24, was killed in a lift at Auckland yesterday. Word has been received that the Education Department has sanctioned a grant for additions to the local State school. A visit to New Zealand will be made towards the end of this year by Mr Sidney Kidman, of Kapunda, South Australia, who is known as the “Australian Cattle King.” He will afterwards travel in America. Writing to a friend in Nelson, Mr Kidman states that he was having a bad time on several of his stations. They were experiencing the worst season he had ever known in many parts of Australia. Many people were quite out of water, and their stock were dying. Mr Kidman has lost over 20,000 cattle during the last 12 months. Last year he sold 11,000 bullocks to the Australian Meat Company, these being delivered in three months, 500 averaging S93UIS, and another mob weighing S7slbs, which will give some idea of what cattle are like in Queensland and other parts ot Australia.
