SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The ordinary meeting of the local State school committee was held on Thursday night. Present; Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Hussey, Henderson, Mitchell, Perreau and Woods. Apologies tor absence were received from Messrs Betty and Chrystall. The Chairman reported that be had authorised certain minor repairs to be carried out and h : s action was endorsed.

The necessity for better ventilation iti certain rooms was discussed. It was explained that the subject had been reported to the Board by both the inspectors and committee, but so far nothing had been done. The local Board representative had inspected the school and had suggested swanneck ventilators for certain rooms. —lt was decided to again communicate with the Board 011 the subject and the chairman was authorised to give the matter attention with power to act on behalf of the committee. The headteacher's report was read and stated, inter alia, that the school opened with an average attendance of 354, the average for the week was 345.0 out of a roll number of 377, last year the average was 346 out of 395, indicating improvement in regularity of attendance, 30 children were admitted and 34 withdrawn, the present roll number is 386. The stall now consists of six assistants and two pup) teachers. Miss Bailey is on sick leave and Mrs Anderson is relieving. Miss Cumberworth, nth assistant, took up her duties on the Ist inst., as also did Miss Collins and Mr B. W. Hunt, pupil teachers. The necessity for proper ventilation is much marked —in one mom particularly it is very bad. While the accommodation is not seriously overtaxed, the necessity for another class room is evident. Minor repairs and a request for the use of a disinfectant with sweeping operations were mentioned. —-The report was received. The chairman stated that in connection with extra accommodation, the Board chairman said that if the accommodation was overtaxed the committee would have to hire a hall until the extensions were carried out. It was decided to do this if necessary. It was decided to instruct the janitor to use disinfectant when sweeping and also to increase his salary by cs per week. The chairman to interview him re same. Messrs Woods and Mitchell, visitors, presented their report and matters contained therein had been giveu attention. The committee passed motions of sympathy with Mrs Braik and Mr Thompson in respect to bereavements sustained.

Messrs Betty and Chrystall were appointed visitors for t! e mouth.
