SUGGESTED CHEESE FACTORY.
Speaking to a district dairy farmer in respect to the proposal to start a cheese factory in Foxton, we were informed that the suggestion was a good one provided sufficient cows could be guaranteed in the immediate locality- He expressed the opinion that the factory should be run on co-operative lines, and not as a propriatory concern. He did not think sufficient cows could be guaranteed locally at present. The •dairy farmers iu the Moutoa district were shareholders in, and guaranteed suppliers to the Shannon Co-operative Dairy Co,, and it was not likely that they would puli out of that even if they could do so legally, which he doubted. He admitted that cheese at present was a splendid paying proposition to milk suppliers, owing to the huge demand ror it necessitated by the war, but it must not be forgotten. that butter, too, was on the up-grade, and in his opinion would reach a record figure before long. Asked if the Shannon Company would consider the erection of a cheese factory at j? o xton, be said he could not say. The matter was one in which the shareholders and suppliers could move. £u conversation with Sir J. G. Wilsou as to the prospects of a
cheese factory in Foxton, Sir James said it would be to Foxton’s interest to have such an industry in the town, and it was worthy o c serious consideration by dairy farmers. He would he pleased to see Foxton lake up the matter. He strongly urged the co-opera-tive principle as against a proprietary concern.
