WAR NEWS.
The news from the seat of war is good. After battering for three weeks and sacrificing enormous numbers of men, the Germans in Belgium and North France have achieved nothing. The latest official communique announces that they hold Dixmude, but another wire says it has been recaptured by the Allies. It is difficult to know which is the later message, but apparently the capture is unimportant so long as the Allies hold the left bank of the canal, and they are doing that without any great difficulty. Little change is announced elsewhere. If the reports are correct, it will be seen that the Kaiser’s idea of massing submarines on the Belgian coast is likely to prove costly, for three are reported to have been destroyed already, one being rammed by a French destroyer, one shelled by a British squadron, and the other exploded on the bottom of the sea. A naval battle is not unlikely in the Pacific if the report is correct that the five German warships there have joined forces.
It is officially announced that Russian mounted scouts are within thirteen miles of Cracow, in Galicia. Elsewhere the Russian advance continues.
A British cruiser destroyed the Turkish forts at Sheikh Said, opposite Perim, at the southern end of the Red Sea.
