LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Thanks notices are inserted by the Queen of the Carnival, Lylla Robinson, Mr and Mis Greig, and Mr and Mrs Patterson. Owing to Mr Gardener’s illness the political address to have been delivered by him in the Coronation Hall to-night, has been postponed indefinitely. The booking for the Coronation and pictures at the Town Hall to-morrow night, is going along merrily. We are informed that all seats in the circle have been filled.
We are pleased to be able to report that the condition of Mr B. R. Gardener, who was taken ill suddenly at Paraparaumu is improving, and that be is sufficiently well to allow of his removal to Otaki.
M. Hamer, draper, notifies in our advertising columns that, having made arrangements to dispose of her stock, and is giving up business, requests that all accounts be settled without delay. In order not to clash with the Belgian Relief Benefit in the Coronation Hall the management of the Royal has decided not to show to-morrow night. The usual Wednesday programme will be screened on Thursday night.
The Saudon tram will be delayed to leave Foxton at 5.45 p.m. to-morrow (Wednesday), in order to give patrons an opportunity ot attending the Carnival. The tram will stop at the racecourse to set down and pick up passengers.
We sincerely hope that our esteemed postmaster will urge upon the department the necessity for completing the telephone arrangements to obviate the present induction. It is very annoying to be compelled to listen, as was the case this morning, to female voices discussing carnival affairs and drowning distance communications.
John Alexander Wilson, aged thirteen, suicided by hanging on Sunday at his aunt’s residence. Christchurch. He had been scolded for misbehaving, and was threatened that he would be given to the police. He went out into the garden and hanged himself. The inquest disclosed that the boy’s father and uncle had committed suicide. A verdict of suicide by hanging was returned.

The Royal was well patronised on Saturday night last, when a varied programme was screened. The star film, “A Rack of Cards,” was a drama descriptive of life in the snow-clad regions of Canada and the existence of the fur trappers in that bleak region. A film of the Adriatic Sea was of more than passing interest since the entry of the Turks into the European conflict, and also proved picturesque from a scenic point of view. The Edison and Vitagraph Companies both contributed items which were well received. Last night another of the special Monday night programmes was screened, and much appreciated. ‘‘The Streets of New York,” the star film, was most interesting throughout, and with the support of a real good list of additional pictures, provided a fine entertainment.
Mrs J. W. Robinson will be pleased to receive gifts in the nature of jams, pickles, sauces, fruits and vegetables for the produce stall, at the forthcoming floral fete in aid of the Belgian Bund.*
