PROBABLE WAR COSTS
TO OVERSEAS DOMINIONS. Sydney, Oct. 5. The Daily Telegraph, in a leader on the financing of the war, says Canada will probably face an expenditure of Australia or more, and Hew Zealand say besides India, South Africa, and other possessions. This may involve 'a total of Though the colonies will undertake to face this liability, they could hardly find the money unassisted, but it will probably be found that the British Government will come to the assistance of the Dominions with war loans.
“Pure piffle, all those figures—absolute balderdash,” was the comment of the Minister of Finance (the Hon. J. Allen) on the cabled estimate of ten millions sterling as the amount New Zealand will expend on the war. Asked whether he cared to give any estimate of the probable expenditure on the war, Mr Allen replied: “How can I, until I have some idea of the duration of the war ? I have already told the House that I have made arrangements for two millions, and I hope that will carry us on for some time yet.”
