KITCHENER’S STATEMENT.

“ABSOLUTEY INCORRECT.” Melbourne, Oct. 4. The Defence Department cabled to Sir George Reid asking if Earl Kitchener’s cabled statement that the war is not likely to last long was correct.

Sir George Reid replied that the statement attributed to Earl Kitchener is absolutely incorrect. A London cable now states that that Earl Kitchener’s statement was taken from the Globe’s report of a farewell gathering of territorials, whereat the captain repeated what Earl Kitchener said when inspecting them.
