SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting; of the local State School committee was held on Thursday night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty, Henderson, Hussey, KentJohnston and Perreau. Correspondence was read from the contractor re asphalting the front path. It was decided that if the work is not proceeded with immediately the contract be cancelled. The head teacher’s report stated that the attendances for the past four weeks were 363.5, 363.4, 352.4 and 358.2 ; the average for the whole period being 359.0, out of an average roll number of 383.5. It was decided to forward a letter of thanks to Mr Poynton, S.M., for his address to the scholars and also for prizes awarded to essay writers. The visitor’s report for the mouth was read and adopted. An account amounting to 9s was passed for payment. The Chairman brought up the question of putting down an asphalt tennis court. This work would not he done if voluntary labour had to be depended on. He had consulted Mr Newth as to the cost of putting down the court. Mr Newth, who was present, presented a detailed statement, which amounted to ,£36 1 4s. Certain details were left with the Chairman and it was decided to go on with the work. The Chairman and Mr Kent-Johuston were appointed visitors for the month and the meeting rose.
