HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A well-attended committee meeting of the Horticultural Society was held last night. The President (Mr G. H. Stiles) occupied the chair. Correspondence was read from Mr Rhodes, of Rata, consenting to act as judge at the Bulb Show, and Mrs Rhodes to judge the decorative classes; Mr H. Witchell wrote offering trophies on behalf of himself and Mrs Witchell and wishing the society continued success.—lt was resolved to forward a letter of thanks to Mr Witchell.

The sub-committee presented a revised schedule for the Bulb Show, aud their recommendation that the date of the Show be Tuesday, September Bth, was unanimously agreed to, as were several other alterations to the catalogue. The sub-committee set up to revise the spring and autumn catalogues also presented the revised schedules. A considerable amount of time was devoted to the suggested alterations to the spring catalogue, and the autumn catalogue was held over. It was decided to allot Mr Shailer’s trophy to Class IS. (blooms other than bulbs) in the Bulb Show. Messrs Van Staveren Bros.’ trophy, value £2 10s, was allotted to most points secured in the Bulb Show, to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals.

In the Spring Show catalogue it was decided to allow pot plants to be exhibited in any receptacle. Previously the judge had disqualified plants grown in other than the regulation flower pots. It was decided to make separate classes for sweet peas and roses, and to award points prizes in these sections.

The Committee decided that sweet peas must be grown from .seed sown by the exhibitor. A resolution that the points prize in the cookery class be restricted to single entries was deleated by eight votes .to seven. The idea was that competitors should only make one entry in each section, as allowing the entrant to put in two or three exhibits in the same section gave an undue advantage. It was pointed out, on the other hand, that it was open for each entrant to do likewise, and the more entries the better it was for the 3ocl&ty« Stencilling and pen-painting were added to the needlework class. It was decided to hold the Spring Show on the 26th and 27th of November. It was decided to pay out pro rata to the extent of the amount contributed to the Society in the birds’ eggs collection class. Mr E. Greig was appointed secretary in place of Mr Patterson resigned, the latter consenting to act until the Bulb Show.
