SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the local State school committee was held on Thursday evening. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Betty, Chrystall, Henderson, Hussey, Kent-Johnston, Perreau and Woods. The minutes of the first and special meetings were read and confirmed. The action of the sub committee in accepting the tender of Mr Martin at ,£lB los for erection of 6ft. corrugated iron fence and Mr Newth, for levelling portion of girls playground was confirmed. The chairman stated that the Board had been written to for a grant in aid of the work-and the tenders submitted to them and on the recommendation of Mr Fraser the Board had granted the committee a £ for £ subsidy. It was decided to ask the contractor for the levelling to push on with the work as soon as possible. The head teacher’s report was read and stated, inter alia, that the average attendances for the past four weeks were: 348.4, 355, 336.3, 337.8 ; the average for the whole period was 344.3 out of an average roll number of 382. “The average has been 90 per cent, of the roll number. This must be considered satisfactory as it includes many children under the compulsory school age. The term exam, is in progress and judging by the work I have already seen, I am pleased to say, that the school is in a very satisfactory condition,” The report was adopted and the visitors were instructed to carry out repairs mentioned in the report. Accounts were passed for payment. Messrs Betty and Chrystall were appointed visitors for the month. Correspondence was read from the Board, stating that the Board’s draughtsman would visit Foxton and prepare plans and estimates for increased accommodation at the school and improvements to the head teacher’s residence. The chairman said the officer, accompanied by Mr Fraser, member of the Board, had visited the school for this purpose. Mr Henderson asked to what part of the building the additions would be made. The chairman explained that the committee had no jurisdiction in this matter, but no doubt any suggestions the committee made would be considered by the Board. The committee then resolved themselves into a technical school committee for the purpose of considering the local supervisor’s report, which was presented in person by Mr Gabites, The report and balance sheet were received and it was resolved on the motion of Messrs Henderson and Woods, that the technical classes be suspended until the summer months, the Board to be notified accordingly, and that the Board be asked to forward the amount due to Mr Gabites for supervision of classes. It was resolved that Mr Gabites be given the use ot the school and lighting to conduct painting and drawing classes and English and arithmetic classes. The meeting then rose.
