LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The services in connection with the Methodist Church, Foxton, will be conducted to-morrow, both morning and evening, by the Rev W. G. Maslin. A service will also be held at Oroua Downs in the afternoon. The handful of school children who accompanied their parents to the Palmerston Show yesterday did not justify the school closing. It is hoped that committeemen will take a note of this tact and not allow school work, to be suspended in future for the Winter Show. The services in All Saints’ Church will be as usual at 8 a.tn,, ix a.m. and 7 p.m. There will be a celebration of the Holy Communion at St. Boniface’s Moutoa, at 11 a.m. In the afternoon the vicar will hold his last service in the old Maori Church at Moutoa.
Says the Levin Chronicle : “ ‘Our staff desire to acknowledge wedding favours from Mr and Mrs Shirtcliffe.’ This small item appears in the Foxton paper, and brings to mind the time in Levin when a marriage was seldom celebrated without the companiohship of the local paper receiving a bottle of wine and a huge piece of cake. Of late we have had marriages one after the other, and never a bite or sup has reached our office. The blessing of the press should always be sought, for it adds spice to the life of the new couple. Of course, we are teetotal now, but our appetite for cake is still keen.”
The parishioners of St. Boniface’s, Marotiri, assembled at the residence of Mr Duncan Campbell, on Thursday aiternoon last, for the purpose of bidding farewell to their departing vicar, ’ the Rev. Mr Woodward and making a presentation to him as a mark oi their esteem. Mr Fenwick, in making the presentation, expressed regret at the Rev. Mr Woodward’s departure and wished him Godspeed iu his new parish. He then handed the recipient a handsome silver hot water kettle inscribed as follows :—Presented to the Rev. G, Y. and Mrs Woodward from parishioners, Marotiri, IS/6/14. Mr Woodward feelingly acknowledged the kindly expression of goodwill towards his wife and himself and spoke of the happy relations which had always existed between himself and the parishioners concerned. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies of Marotiri, bringing a very pleasant little function to a close.
