COUNTERFEIT MONEY.

COINING PLANT FOUND IN A WHARF. Auckland, June 12. A complete set of moulds for making counterfeit sovereigns, half-crowns and shillings, was discovered at the residence of Frederick A Smith, on Hairini Settlement, near Te Awamutu. The police found in a whare twelve sets of moulds for halfcrowns, one for sovereigns, three for shillings, also a quantity of lead, solder, files, rasps and ladles. The coins seized by the police are described as excellent work, the baseness only being detected by the ring. Smith appeared at the court at Te Awamutu on a charge of making and attempting to utter : counterfeit coin. The defence was in the direction that Smith was not sane. Smith was committed for trial at Hamilton.
