The death took place at Palmerston North on Wednesday of the wife of Mr J. M. Johnston. The services in All Saints* Church to-morrow will be as usual at 8 a.m., ix a.m. and 7 p.m. Mr G. H. Davey, late of Foxton State school staff, has beeu appointed first assistant at the Maugaweka school.

A splendid programme will be screened at the Coronation Hall to night, the star film being 2000 feet in length. The Queen of the South sailed from Wellington yesterday with a cargo of general merchandise for Foxton, but on arrival off the bar was unable to cross inwards owing to the poor tide, and returned to Wellington. She is due again on Monday.

A well attended meeting of the local Golf Club, presided over by Dr. Maudl, was held on Monday evening. The official opening of* the links was fixed for Wednesday next, 25th instant. A large number of new members were elected. At the conclusion of the business a presentation was made to Mr Harvey, to whose efforts the formation of the club was due. The presentation took the form of an oak chimney clock, engraved as follows: “Presented to John E. Harvey, Esq,, by the members of the Foxton Golf Club as a small token of appreciation. 16/3/14.”

Entire revision of the whole railway time-table for the North Island is being considered by the Department at present (says the Dominion). The Minister of Railways states that he hopes that the changes will mean a speeding up of the Napier-Wellington express. A proposal to remove the Railway Traffic Manager’s office from Wanganui to Palmerston is also being considered by the Department. Does the present timetable between Foxton and Palmerston suit the public requirements? If not then the Borough Council should review the position and suggest alterations to the General Manager before it is too late. We might add that the Foxton branch line is one of the best revenue-producing dead ends In the Dominion.

Rather a significant movement is reported to be in progress in the ranks of the Flax-workers’ Union says Thursday’s Palmerston Standard. The militant section of the union is said to be very much dissatisfied and disgusted with the tactics and actions of the leaders of the Federation of Labour, and while still adhering to the principles of the Federation, the militant 'division of the flaxworkers is desirous of severing all connection between the Federation and Union. A requisition is therefore being prepared and is being signed, demanding a special meeting of the Union on March 28 to consider the advisability of cutting adrift from the Federation. It is - stated that about 300 men are involved in the diversion of opinion, which will have an important bearing upon the future of the Labour movement.
