THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
FREIGHT REDUCED BY SHIPPING COMPANIES.
Recently a deputation from the Manawatu Flaxmillers' Association waited upon the various shipping companies iu Wellington, asking that, if possible, a reduction be made in the freight on hemp to England, iu view of the decline in price and the consequent result, that if the freight charges remained as they were, a number of mills would have to close down.
A reply to the deputation has just been received by Mr E. E* Broad, president of the Association, the shipping authorities stating that after giving the matter careful consideration, they bad decided to reduce the freight by 20s per ton on hemp, tow and stripper slips from May Ist to October 31st. This action of the shipping companies is much appreciated by the millers, as it will now enable a number to carry on, who would otherwise have had to stop milling. It also shows that the shipping companies recognise the inportance of the flax industry.
