INCIPIENT FIRE AT THE ROYAL.
DESTRUCTION OF FILMS. A fire in the operating cabinet at “The Royal” last night was responsible for the management being unable to screen the second part of the picture programme. It appears that just prior to the time for commencing the second halt of the programme the operator temporarily left the cabinet, and during his absence someone else entered the cabinet, and in looking at the film, allowed same to come in close proximity with the lamp, with the result that it ignited. The film was pulled from the machine and thrown to the floor, and being very inflammable, commenced to burn fiercely. The alarm was given and when the operator returned he found the inside of, the cabinet a mass of flames. .Fortunately the cabinet is asbestos lined which confined the flames to the enclosure. The fire was extinguished with a couple of buckets of water. In conversation with Mr Hamer this morning he informed us that the damage other than the films, was only about £2, and that the operating cabinet and plant would be fixed up and in running order to-nigbt.
