STRIKE AT BLACKBALL.
350 MINERS OUT
TROUBLE OVER “DOG
WATCH.”
GhEYMOUTH, August 18
Blackball miners, numbering about 350, all struck work this morning. It appears that about seven days ago the men demanded that the back shift between midnight and eight a.m,, known as the “ dog watch,” be abolished. The company did,not reply to the demand, with the result stated.
At the outside only seven pairs of men are engaged during this shift their duties being to conduct development work preparatory to the coal-getters following them up. Should the shift be abolished, it means a less output, as a large number of men, would have to stand by. awaiting development work to be gone on with, as both sections could not use the same cable together. Pumping operations are being kept going for the course of a few days, pending a settlement.
At a meeting of the Miners’ Union held yesterday it was agreed to allow a reporter to attend all meetings, but reports are subject to censorship by a special press committee set up. It is rumoured that the Runanga miners have been asxed to join the strikers, but refused to take a hand.
