THE MAORI CEMETERY.

In connection with the efforts of the local Borough Council to have the old Maori Cemetery at the north end of Main Street vested in it, a letter was read at last night’s meeting from the Borough Solicitor stating that he bad communicated with Aputa on the matter and that her husband had waited on him and stated that at present she would not agree to the transfer being made but would consider the matter again at a later date-

The Mayor said that Aputa’s husband had watted on him and appeared to be very indignant because the trees in the cemetery had been cut down without permission and in consequence of this he had stated that he would not at present agree to the land being vested in the Council, but would withhold his consent until he had dealt with those who had cut the trees down without permission and from whom he signified his intention of claiming damages.

In reply to a question the Mayor said it was not the Council that gave permission to have the trees cut down.
