MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS AMENDMENT BILL.
The Municipal Corporations Amendment Bill as circulated, provides that Mayors shall be elected yearly by Councils from among their members, but this provision is not to come into force till 19*5The Governor may, by Order-in-Council, authorise the laying off of streets and private streets of a width less than 66ft, but not less than 40ft, for the , purpose of connecting blind streets with other streets, provided the connecting street is not more than two chains in length. The cost of installing gas or electric light may be paid by householders by instalments, with interest not less than four and not more than six per cent. The Council may, out of the general funds, appropriate sums for supplying music in recreation grounds, etc. Power is given to Councils to license boarding-houses. The Bill contains a large number of machinery provisions for dealing with various matters. The Councils in time of floods or other emergencies may lead surplus water from waterworks into natural streams with a view to protecting waterworks.
