PROFITABLE POLO.

£40.000 TAKEN IN AMERICA,

LONDON, June 16,

The amount paid in admission, money at the International polo contests, just concluded at Meadowbrook, Long Island (New York), totalled not less than £40,000, .As the profits all go to the American Polo Association this, body netted £35,000, the expenses amounting to £5,000.

The ponies taken oyer to America by the English team numbered nearly 50 ’ and were, perhaps, the most valuable collection ever got together in the history of the game. On the previous occasion, two years ago, in which they went over to.the United States the English players suffered very much through the failure of their ponies to stand the hard work and the climatic changes associated with their journey across the Atlantic. ■ The Duke of Westminster, himself a great polo player, spent some time getting together a powerful .troupe of the best polo ponies possible for the great contest, and more than half of those that left England were the Duke’s own property. Of those Energy, Kilkenny,- Tiger, and Nutmeg made the trip two years ago. The average value of these animals worked out at £4OO, but there were some valued at £7OO, £BOO, and £IOOO. In all the entire troop may be’ valued at £20,000, and the ponies were all insured by the Atlantic Transport Company.
