STEAMERS IN COLLISION.

ONE SUPPOSED TO HAVE SUNK,

AMERICAN LAKE DISASTER.

NEW YORK, June 16. The steamer a Jessie Spaulding and William Snyder crashed into each other on Lake Superior last night, and as a result of the collision the former vessel, which was employed in carrying ore, is believed to have sunk. The William Snyder was used as a collier. . Shortly after the smash the signals of distress that were seencominjr from the Jessie Spaulding suddenly ceased. The William Snyder thereupon made a search for the ore steamer, of which, however, not a trace could bo found. The Jessie Spaulding carried a crew of 16, and it is highly probable that she foundered, since there was little chance of beaching the vessel in the lake.
