CONDUCT OF RACING.
STIPENDIARY STEWARDS’ SUGGESTIONS. For some time past it has been known that the stipendiary stewards intended' making a number of suggestions for the ■better conduct of racing,: and this is now verified by a circular letter forwarded by the secretary of tho Racing Conference to the avarious ciuba under its jurisdiction. The ‘ letter states: — I am directed by the president (at tho request of the stipendiary: stewards’ committee) to bring tho following matters under the notice of all committees, with a view to action being taken wherever it may bo required for tho better conduct of race meetings. It is- recommended:let. That all clubs should take advantage of Part V., Rule 1, empowering the appointment of a judicial committee to consider all protests or objections. 2nd. That particular care should be taken to prment access to the weighing room and jockeys room by persona having no right to bo there. 3rd. That in order to exclude undesirable persons an efficient detective be appointed to all race meetings. 4th. That no trainer or other assistant shall (unless with the express permission of. the stewards) attend any horse at the start of a race for the purpose of helping such horse to get away. , sth. That as under Part XXII,, Rule 8, clubs may provide books of engagement forms to jockeys (such books being obtainable on application to tho conference office), jockeys be requested to produce these books whenever disputes arise with regard to any engagement to ride. t 6th. It has been reported to the president that the provisions, of Part XX., Rule 7, are not carried out by a number of clubs and district committees. Correct records of the behaviour of jockeys and trainers cannot bo kept by the Conference Office and tho Licensing Committee of each District Committee, unless groat care is taken by secretaries to comply strictly with the rule.
7th. It is essential that correct • evidence bo recorded- at all enquiries, and clube should, where possible,' provide a competent shorthand writer to talj,e. down the evidence given. -
