Gisborne continues to head the list of WfOHgbs of the Dominion in respect of births. The Jjgnres for April were as follows: —Gisborne 6j?, Palmerston _ 46, Timaru 41, Invercargill 40, Wangappi go, Napier 30, New Plymouth 28, Greymouth 23, and Oamaru 22.
A strong move is (writes the Chronicle s travelling reporter) being made in the li'angitiltei district to have a district hospital, and work has commenced with that object in view. Tbo Rangitilfoi ( oiinty alone contributes over £I,OOO a year (o the Wanganui hospital, and it is felt that the time has arrived for the establishment of a district hospital. The other day the New Zealand Times Accused the Reform Government of “greasing tho fat pig” by contributing £SOO to ihe cost of a bridge on a road through what is known as the Newman ( estate, to connect the Poningahun road with the Haiumft station. The whole cost of the bridge, it said, was only £503, and its only object to provide a. short cut for a few privileged people with motor cars. The Uimovirko News points out that the vote in question was pluced on tho estimates b fc the Mackenzie Govenuueut.
