EARTHQUAKE.

The severest earthquake experienced in this district for many years happened at ten minutes past seven on Saturday evening. It was a double shock, preceded by the usual rumbling, and then a real rocker and a subsequent trembling. The shock created alarm in every household, but beyond broken crockery no serious damage is reported. The plaster on one or two of the interior walls of the new buildings in Main Street was cracked, and a partition in Mr Walls’ bakery establishment was jerked from the wall.

Had the shock lasted a few more seconds, it is safe to predict that considerable damage would have occurred,

In the Wairarapa the shock was particularly severe. At Masterton a piece of masonry fell from the Post Office and struck a Maori youth who was standing on the footpath, killing him instantly. Crowds of people were panic stricken, and made for the open, but no serious damage is reported.

The shock was felt in other places throughout the Dominion, but not so severe as in the south of this Island.

Another shock was experienced on Sunday afternoon, at 3 o’clock.
