SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the School Committee was held last night. Present: Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Barber, Betty, Hunt, Hussey and Alex. Speirs. Correspondence was read from Manawatu A. and P. Association, offering free passes to the children desirous of attending the Winter Show aud also offering tvvo prizes for essay on same. It was decided to grant a holiday for the show and to leave the other details in the bauds ot the head teacher. It was resolved to send a delegate to the School Committees Association Conference to be held at Wanganui and to deal further with the business to be discussed at same till next meeting.
The head teacher reported that during the quarter there had been an average attendance of 3 34 out of an average roll number of 362. The Chairman stated that this number constituted a record attendance in the history of the school.
Several miuor repairs w ere left in the hands of Mr Speirs. Mr Swift wrote asking for a further grant of on his contract price for levelling portion of the school ground owing to level pegs having been removed and the growth of weeds. It was resolved to grant the increase asked for.
Messrs Betty and Speirs were appointed visitors for the month, and accounts were passed for payment. The urgent necessity of erecting brick chimneys and fireplaces to replace the present stoves and flues in the school was discusse d aud the Chairman was authorised to communicate with the Board on the matter. Other r outiue business was transacted and the meeting rose.
