LAND AGGREGATION.
The matter of land aggregation was touched upon at Thursday’s meeting ot the Wellington 1,-and Board, when an application for the lease of a section came up for consideration. The name of the intended transferee prompted inquiry of the ranger whether the person applying wasamember ofacertain family who among them held a very large acreage of land. The ranger said he knew the family, but not the prospective transferee. “If he belongs to the family of the same name, then I do not think he is landless as he states,” said the ranger. “ They have all got land—-the whole family. This man , may or may not be a member of this family, and he may hold land, but not in his own name.”
“We know aggregation is going on,” said Mr Dawson. There was no doubt about it, he added.
Mr Georgetti: We know it is, and apparently the law allows it. Mr Dawson said it. would be possible for him with a large family to “mop up” a lot of land. A tew such families could “ mop up ” all the laud in the country. The ranger said that if the man belonged to the family he knew, that fapiily had land all over the country. The applicant might not have land in his own name, assuming that he was a member of the family in question. It was decided that the ranger make investigations before the board disposed of the application.
