ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH.
LETTER TO PARISHIONERS,
MV De.ii Parishioners. —By the kindutss of the Editor of this paper I am .illuwed to appeal to you through these columns or. behalf of tne Melanesian Mission. Next Sunday is set apart in all the Dioceses ot New Zealand for this Mission, and a special offertory will be taken up for it. This is what the Bishop of Melanesia writes to the friends of the Mission :
“I appeal with confidence for your generous support of the Mission, I have been round ray Diocese in the ‘Southern Cross’ and can confidently assure church people in New Zealand that the principles upon which the work is based are sound in the light of modern missionary experience. They were laid by B}shdp G- A. Sehvyu and Bishop Pattesou, the policy of the ‘black nets with the white corks.’ No other system can be devised which is better likely to achieve our object, namely, the foundation of a Native Church. There are 33 white workers, of whom 13 are ladies. These train and supervise the 700 native teachers, who faithfully set the Christian standard in the Islands, The expenditure of the Mission is per annum. The income last year was neatly ,£IB,OOO. We ask our friends to give a little more, and to enlist the interest of others, so that the deficit of 500 can be made good. We can then go on without anxiety. I commend the Mission to your prayers. We pass lives of great isolation and need all the strength and support that intercession can bring.—l remain, yours faithfully in Christ, Cecil John Melanesia.”
Most of you know the danger and isolation of these brave servants of the Master, who are carrying the torch of the gospel light in the land of heathen darkness. Will you not do what you can on Sunday by giving of your abundance, and thus enable more workers to be sent to relieve and comfort those who. are so nobly obeying the great charge, ‘‘Go ye therefore and make deciples of all the nation.” —Your affectionate vicar, G. Y. Woodward.
