SPORTS PROTECTION LEAGUE.

LOCAL BRANCH FORMED

A meeting of those interested in the formation of a branch of the Sports Protection League was held iu the Coronation Hall on Tuesday evening. There was an attendance of about 30 and His Worship the Mayor occupied the chair.

The organising secretary of the League, Mr Paape, briefly addressed those present on the aims and aspirations of the League, and submitted to his hearers the necessity of a society to prevent encroachments on honestly - con - ducted sports, as followers of sport in many- lands were being harrassed and interfered with by unreasonable extremists, and it was the duty of every sportsmap who desired to maintain pure sport against interference to fight against the organised extremists. Mr Paape said the League did not interest itself in party politics—it was a non-political body. It had been stated that the League was formed in the interest of racing clubs alone, but the speaker denied this statement absolutely. A further misstatement was that it was being run in the interests of the liquor trade, and that also was false. As the Hon. H. D, Bell had said the League had not solicited nor received a shilling from the liquor trade. The whole object of the League was to protect all branches of sport.

It was decided on the motion of Mr Graham, seconded by Mr Haydock, that a branch of the Sports Protection League be formed in Foxton.

The following officers were elected : Patron, His Worship the Mayor (Mr A. J. Gibbs) ; president, Dr. Mandl; vice-presidents, Messrs Geo. Coley, Harvey and Freeman, and subject to their consent the presidents of the Racing, Rowing, Bowling and Tenuis Clubs ; secretary, Mr W. Gray; committee, Messrs Dumsden, Green, Hynes, Graham and Petrie.

The meeting terminated after passing votes ot thanks to the sneaker and chairman.
