MOTOR CAR MISHAPS.

SEVERAL FATALITIES

Timaru, January 26

Through the bursting of a tyre a fatal motor car accident occurred last evening four miles south of Timaru.-

The car was owned and driven by Mr McFarlane, a tanner on Waitaki and contained beside him Mr Charles H. Guthrie, a stock agent at Waimate, and in the back seat Mr Harrison, a farmer of Waihao, and two young daughters of Mr McFarlane. The car capsized upon the men, but the girls were thrown clear, and were unhurt.

Mr Guthrie, who is a married man was killed. Mr McFarlane was very seriously hurt, having a broken leg and ribs and injury to bis head. Mr Harrison was slightly hurt, chiefly with shock. Both are now in the hospital. Mr McFarlane and Mr Harrison were formerly of Rakaia.

Invercargill, Jan, 27

On Sunday morning Bartholomew Lynch, a traveller for J. G. Ward and Co., in company with Jas. Macintosh, of the same firm, was crossing a narrow bridge in the Fortrose district when the car went over and capsized in the bed of the creek, ten teet below. Macintosh escaped with a shaking but Lynch, exclaiming “I’m done,” expired. Deceased was aged 35, and leaves a widow and one child.

Wellington, Jan. 26

A motor car accident of a serious nature occurred yesterday near the Silverstream bridge. Two cars were bound for the races and it appears that one, a taxi, was being taken up past the other. The latter got too far off the road, and in attempting to straighten up the driver turned the car’s head back on the road 100 sharply. The result was that the two cars collided.

Oue dashed clean through a wire fence, taking out the posts, and pulled up much damaged iu the adjoining paddock. The other, which was also damaged, remained on the road.

The occupants of both cars were thrown out violently. Mr Joe Foster, the driver of one of the cars, was thrown through the window screen and had his right hip seveiely lacerated. Mr W. M. Curtis, an American visitor, had his left arm broken. Mr H. Brown suffered injury to his back. Mr Higgins, another passenger, suffered from shock.

Ot those in the other car, Messrs Gerald Stead and M. Murphy escaped with a shaking, but Mr Harry Duff, of Hawke’s Bay, had several ribs broken.

The injured men were attended by Dr. Fyffe. Mr Foster was sent to the public hospital, while Mr Murphy, alter receiving attention at an ambulance hospital on the racecourse, was brought to a private hospital in town.
