BURGLARIES.

OFFICE OF ROSS AND SON ENTERED.

During last night the office of Messrs Ross and Sou, Ltd., in Johnston Street, was entered, and £g in gold and £>4. odd in silver, stolen from the strong-room. A small black cash box containing deeds and papers in connection with the firm’s business, of great value to the owners, was also taken, but fortunately the contents of the box have since been recovered, being found this morning at the back of the office. The thief had apparently forced the box open and finding the contents of no value to anyone but the owners, left them behind. Mr Lyon, clerk in the employ of Ross and Sou, Ltd., left the office at. 5. o’clock yesterday alternoou, leaving the strong room door open and the keys in the lock.

Mr Pearson,; secretary of the Company, left at about 5.15 o’clock, and did not look to see il the strong-room was locked.

Mr Wiiliam Ross was.in the office between 8 and 9 o’clock in the evening, but did not go near the strong-room. The thief apparently effected an entrance through the door, as nothing was forced, and the door was found closed this morning. Other than the articles stolen nothing has been interfered with. The police are prosecuting enquiries.

An impudent burglary was committed at the Beach yesterday afternoon, and a sum of money, amounting to several pounds, stolen from a residence occupied by Mr and Mrs Dailey. The occupants were only absent from the house for about an hour, and the depredators must have witnessed their departure. Money was the object ol the visitation, for nothing else was stolen. Wearing apparel and other things were scattered about the. bedroom floor, and the key ol the bedroom door was broken. Why this was done is difficult to understand, as the door was unlocked. Part of the money stolen was the holiday savings of one of the children. The police are investigating.
