MOUTOA DRAINAGE WORKS.
PRACTICALLY COMPLETED. The flood waters of the Mauawatu River have always been a great source of trouble to the laud owners in this district, and some few years back a meeting of those interested was held tor the purpose of discussing ways and tneaus to, as far as possible minimising the trouble in this connection. As a result of the meeting a drainage district was formed, and a Board elected —called the Moutoa Drainage Board, the functions of which were to as far as possible effectually deal with the question of an outlet for the overflow waters. The services of au engineer were obtained and he advised the the construction of a large drain. The construction of this drain was commenced some two or three years back, the first work being doue by means of scoops. It was louud that this method was neither economical nor expeditious, and the engineer then recommended obtaining a dredge, which was hired from the Railway Department, and the work was pushed on. The dredging has now been finished, the last having been doue on Thursday, and the whole work for which the Board was formed is complete with the exception of a little clearing in the middle of the drain at the button end. The drain is three miles in length and 40ft. wide for a mile from Us mouth, then 30ft. for another mile, and the last length is 20ft. in width. The cost of the work was and it is recognised by all that the benefit so far received by the owners has justified the expenditure.
