MOUTOA NOTES.

(Own Correspondent)

It is rumoured that the milk supply to the local factory will eclipse auy of previous years. It is quite possible that a branch of the United Labour Patty will be formed in Moutoa soon. Farmers and workers in this district realise that the Reform Government is not an improvement 011 the Ward Government.

I am pleased to report that Mrs C. Firth, who has been suffering from a severe attack of influenza and mumps, has almost recovered.

The weather ot late has been the worst ou record for a number of years. The Mauawatu River has been in flood no less than six times within the last three months. All the local flaxtnills are closed owing to the swamps being under water. Suspending milling operations at present, while hemp is on the rise, means a heavy loss to both millers and employees. The Postal Department has decided to open a postal-note issue at the Moutoa post office, v\ hich will be a great convenience to the neighbourhood.

The main rnad to Shannon and Foxton is at present in a disgraceful and almost impassable condition. When such a state of affairs exists within a stones-lhrow of the Empire City, what must it he like in the backblocks ? Dr Chessen, of the Public Health Department, Wellington, paid an official visit to Whitauuui last week, and expressed himself as quite satisfied with the surroundings, and personally complimented Mrs G. R. Hall, who is in charge of the catering department. It is hoped the agitation ot the Flaxtnill Employees Union, together with the member f,r the district, in bringing before the Government the urgent necessity for better accommodation and pu.e water at flax mills will result in an improvement being effected.
