FLAXMILLERS' ASSOCIATION.

A meeting ot members ot the N.Z. Flaxmillers’ Ass,elation was held at Falmerston North yesterday to discuss matters in connection with the recent outbreak of typhoid at the mills. There were present:—Messis A. L,. Broad (in ihe chair), K. P. Revien, C, C. Higginsou, A., L, ., G., and VV. Seitert, H. Akers and his man ager (Mr Mackay), H. Gieig, W. A. Keiller, Ingram, D. Green, Munro, G. Craw, H. F. Gibbons, L,. Sadd and M. Cohen. Messrs Stowe and Robinson, officers 01 the Workers Uuiou, were present unofficially. ,

Dr. Marlin, at the invitation ol the Association, addressed those present as to the best means of checking or preventing outbreaks ot typhoid, and made the following suggestions: — 1. That the Health Department lurnish au exhaustive report on the sanitation, hygiene, water and food supply of the flaxmills to the llaxmill proprietors. 2. To embody their recommendations iu this report to the flaxmill proprietors. 3. The flaxmill proprietors to agree to carry out in every detail all these recommendations.

4. Suitable pressure to be applied to any miller who will not cairy them out.

5. Ail mills lu be inspected by the Health Department every six months, aud repotted on to the Bc ,r ! mentioned below.

'6. That a Boaid be set up consisting 01 four ot five flaxmillers and tour or five workers. This Board might be called “ The Health Board,” Its duly ffionld be to receive and investigate ai all limes complaints- affecting the health conditions at any mills and gel any evils remedied at once.

The chairman said he would be glad to submit Dr. Marlin’s recommendations to his Association, aud doubtless they could be brought before the men also. Their discussion could perhaps he best deferred till after thHealth Officer had inspected.

Messrs Stove and Robinson were invited to express opinions on the scheme, ’.u ie_ .a;.;, e; v-. -re not present omoally aud would therefore rather not speak. A motion was passed urging mill owners to i ke immediate steps to effect improvements without waiting for the inspector’s report. Messrs rt., T., and G-. Seifert took part in the discussion, and Mr Smith expressed the hope that the men would co-operate with the millers. The meeting was then adjourned.
